strategic plan for the next ten years. Compared with the prior strategic plan (updated in 2008), the latest edition clearly represents an attempt to refocus the USGCRP and its goals. Whereas previously, USGCRP narrowly framed its mission around climate science and uncertainty reduction, the 2012 strategic plan has science as just one of four goals, with the others focusing on decision support, conducting sustained assessments, and communication and outreach. This is consistent with a decade of feedback from organizations such as the National Research Council. It will be interesting to see how the individual agencies of which USGCRP is comprised will attempt to realign their research priorities to match the rhetoric of the strategic plan.
